 The thermal springs of Hierapolis were popular in Hellenistic times. Today it is still possible to "take the waters" and swim in the health-invoking mineral pools, since among the ancient city ruins the original thermal pool is still functioning. It is a great experience to swim in this pool surrounded by the many ancient monuments and relics. The nearby cotton castle of Pamukkale is one of Turkey's most memorable sights. The calcium deposits from the thermal springs have formed extraordinary white marble-like terraces flowing down the hillside like milk and honey.
 Perhaps the most important health centre in ancient Asia Minor was in Pergamum. Annexed to the city was a health complex dedicated to Asclepius, the son of the god Apollo. Asclepius was believed to have healing powers and to know the secrets of all plants which he used to make medicines. In his health centre Asclepion, named after him, the remains of the healing rooms and the ancient tunnel, which was used for a kind of healing meditation, are still in very good condition.
